Legal Services

What We Do:

Represent the Board and its employees or agents in Federal, State, local and administrative proceedings
Provide legal advice to schools and administrative offices on a broad range of issues, including federal and state education law, employment law, intellectual property law, school governance, constitutional law and charter schools
Represent the CEO in student disciplinary hearings
Represent the CEO in employee disciplinary and grievance matters
Negotiate, draft and review contracts and Memoranda of Understanding
Provide advice and counsel to the CEO, the Board and management on school redistricting, school closings, real estate transactions, facility use, procurement and insurance issues
Assist the Board and CEO in updating and developing Board policies and administrative regulations
Process Public Information requests
Provide training on legal issues impacting the school environment
Provide legal advice to IEP teams and administrative staff regarding the implementation of special education laws and regulations, and investigate and respond to MSDE complaints
Represent City Schools in due process mediations and administrative hearings
