About Booker T. Washington Middle School
Our Vision
Learning Starts Here... Inspire, Transform, Celebrate.
School Mission
Our school works with all stakeholders to support our students in becoming well-rounded in both Arts and academic rigor. Our school cooperatively supports parents, teachers, students, administrators, and the community to provide a safe and nurturing environment where all children can achieve their maximum potential and thus become productive members of society to pursue the pathways of their choice.
Booker T. Washington Middle School relies on a strong art-focused curriculum. Our students learn the importance of one of the following: theater, instrumental music, media arts, dance, or visual arts. Beginning in 6th grade, our students develop their arts abilities and choose a discipline. Students use these skills to immerse themselves in the core academic classes that will propel them to a high school of their choice. We are a restorative practices school, where students become problem solvers and find the value of relationships. Through the strength of our culture, academic programming, and arts prominence, our students are prepared to be well-rounded individuals who take on challenges and change the environment around them.
Principal's Message
Dear BTW Family,
Welcome back, new and returning Booker T. Washington Middle School for the Arts family! I am genuinely eager to welcome you back to another exciting school year. I hope you all enjoyed your summer break and reclaimed your energy as you recharged and refreshed your personal wellness.
It seems that as quickly as summer begins, summer concludes, and our thoughts turn to preparing for the start of school. Though summer is leaving us, a new year with new opportunities, success, and budding memories is ahead of us. Last year was filled with a significant number of victories, as well as key opportunity areas. We look forward to celebrating our wins and critically approaching our opportunity areas to move us further toward our school-wide goals.
This year's theme is B.T.W. on the R.I.S.E.: through Sustainability and Engagement. As we continue to ascend to new heights, we must sustain the momentum built by remaining consistent and ensuring that we engage all stakeholders in the process. We have achieved great success by leveraging staff, students and the community at Booker T.!. During the 2022-2023 academic year, we outperformed all City Schools serving students in grades 6-8 through double-digit Attendance growth and decreasing the number of chronically absent students (13.3%); we proudly named and continue to celebrate City School's Teacher of the Year, Jared Perry; we demonstrated outstanding growth (11%) in proficiency and drastic improvement (30%) in the number of students moving from Level 1 (below grade level) on the 2023 Spring ELA MCAP; we secured 1.5 million in funding to support facilities upgrades to our performing arts spaces; we acquired funding to support or building’s new S.T.E.M. Center; the list goes on quite a bit. Our many successes were achieved through the countless efforts of individuals in our building. Just imagine, as we open the doors to families, the community, and more partners, the work we will be able to sustain and the acceleration we will experience. We are on the R.I.S.E.!
If you are new to our school family, welcome; if you are returning, welcome home. Together, we will certainly R.I.S.E. to new heights. In closing, and in the words of our beloved Booker T. Washington Jr., "Opportunities never come a second time, nor do they wait for our leisure." We have the opportunity to do something special this year: we have the chance to continue to defy all odds; we have the chance to R.I.S.E.!
I look forward to RISING with each and every one of you in 2024.
RISING Together,
Rashida S. Ford, M.Ed.
