GAL:

The Gifted and Advanced Learning (GAL) Program at Curtis Bay is one that has been uniquely designed to meet the needs of individual students in grades Pre-K - 5.  Early identification begins when Pre-K and Kindergarten students engage in analogies practice using First Time Analogies, Lollipop Logic, and Legends of Learning (available in the Clever portal).  When students demonstrate readiness, ALL Kindergarten students are given the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test 3 (NNAT), a test that was “designed to remove cultural influences, allow students to solve problems regardless of the language they speak, and significantly reduce the amount of formal knowledge required so tests measure how well students 'think', rather than what students 'know’.”  Additionally, any student in grades 1-5 that have not been tested or should be retested are also provided with strategic practice opportunities before being given the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test for their grade level. If you would like your child to be retested with the NNAT3, please fill out our online form. You can also contact Kate Amberger at kbamberger@bcps.k12.md.us or Raina Somogyi at rsomogyi@bcps.k12.md.us with any questions.

Once identified, students complete an interest inventory, and their academic data is analyzed on an individual basis to determine their GAL path.  An Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) is then created for each GAL student to determine the type of Personalized Learning they should receive.  These types of learning include one or more of the following:
