Enrichment & Support

In elementary and middle school, we set the stage for well-rounded development and a lifelong love of learning. Curriculum-wise, a strong core of humanities and STEM subjects is complemented by foreign language, arts, and numerous other enrichment classes. Unlike most other elementary / middle schools, Garrett Heights does not use a single-teacher approach to instructing across multiple subjects. Each subject is taught by a different teacher, i.e. a subject matter expert! Additionally, we emphasize mastery over test scores.

Beyond academics, students develop routines, habits, and characteristics that reinforce a positive learning environment, such as personal responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance.

Our goal is to promote self-discipline, responsibility, and respect that carries forward from the school community into the world. Each student is encouraged to do his or her best and are positively reinforced though a leveling awards program that may encompass not only academic achievement, sportsmanship, and citizenship; but also, school service, and improvement in any area of the school community.

ART

Pre-K – 8th Grade

All students will be studying famous artists and will create artwork that is inspired by those artists.  Lessons are created to cover all Maryland Visual Art Standards and to support the College and Career Readiness Standards for additional content areas that students will be learning in their base classroom.

Students will have the opportunity to creatively express themselves by using many art mediums such as oil pastels, artist chalk, paint, printing making, mixed media artwork, clay, etc

Music

Pre-K – 8th Grade

Music Education is an integral part of every child’s education.  Participating in music class promotes the development of focus, confidence, language skills, and academic achievement in other subject areas.

Practicing music also builds teamwork, collaboration, communication skills, leadership skills, and creativity.

Drama

Pre-K – 8th Grade

Middle School Students will take a blended year of music and drama.  We believe that this approach to learning drama helps students develop creativity, confidence, and communication skills.  Through this musical-dramatic exploration, students will learn to express their feelings, emotions, thoughts, dreams, and opinions.

In addition, drama challenges students’ perceptions about the world around them and helps participants develop empathy and understanding towards others. Students will learn about performance, design, and history; and have a lot of fun doing it!

STEM

Pre-K – 8th Grade

STEM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to guide student inquiry, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity.  Students become designers, creators, thinkers, and leaders.

The focus of the GHEMS STEM Lab is to help students develop an understanding of the Engineering Design Process and develop inquiry skills by engaging in STEM-related challenges.  GHEMS is working to partner with local and national organizations to develop student understanding of STEM-related jobs and work opportunities for the 21st Century.  We work collaboratively with Morgan State University students to develop lessons and materials that inspire the next generation of engineers.
