"The Poly Library: We Can Help"
The Poly Library is a place and a program that supports students and staff in creating a school community that values equity, justice, inclusion and joy in academic and social emotional learning. We do this by engaging with patrons and empowering student voice as we collaborate with partners to provide access to 21st century tools and skills for research, literacy and responsive services.
It is important that each school provide a safe space where students can seek quiet, solitude, and space for reflection, respite, and support. A school library provides alternative learning space from the traditional classroom environment, where students with diverse needs can seek academic differentiation and support to work independently and with small groups, with access to a certified librarian who can provide support in a variety of formats.
A student who is information literate can:
Access information efficiently and effectively, evaluate information accessed and uses information effectively and creatively.
Work as an independent learner by pursuing information related to personal interests, appreciating and enjoying literature, and striving for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation.
Contribute positively to the learning community by recognizing the importance of information practices, ethical behavior and participating in groups to pursue and generate information.
In a technology and information-based society, it is necessary that students be able to access information in a variety of formats. In order to support the educational goals of the school, the School Library must be accessible, have adequate materials, equipment, supplies, and staff to meet the needs of the students, faculty and various curricula of the school.
The School Librarian works in cooperation with the classroom teacher to help the students achieve educational excellence. They work to develop and plan a program to teach media literacy, telecommunications and critical thinking skills through independent and integrated lessons, and to promote reading as a lifelong habit.
