In an exciting development for Baltimore City Public Schools, Selestine Karimi Muriuki, an international teacher from Kenya, Africa, has joined the school system as a middle school science teacher at Midtown Academy. With the addition of nearly 800 new teachers districtwide this school year, Selestine is a shining example of the highly skilled individuals who contribute to our students' success. We had the opportunity to chat with Selestine to learn more about her journey, and the unique perspective she brings to her role.
1. What inspired you to become a teacher, and how did you decide to transition to Baltimore?
Ms. Karimi: My inspiration for becoming a teacher was because I love teaching as it offers me an opportunity to connect with the young generation through knowledge transfer. I always wanted to teach in Baltimore City Public Schools since I felt that I would get a great opportunity for professional development and growth. Additionally, Baltimore City Public Schools offers a rich cultural experience and diversity which is essential for me as a cultural exchange teacher. Lastly, I heard about the district’s reputation from a friend who has worked in City Schools for 13 years and the fact that it has a Teacher’s Union and adequate remuneration made me want to teach here.
2. Coming from Kenya to teach in a different country is a significant change. Can you share any memorable experiences or cultural differences you've encountered in your short time here?
Ms. Karimi: Transitioning from Kenya to the United States, specifically to Baltimore for teaching, has indeed been a transformative experience, filled with memorable moments and cultural differences. The teaching methods and curriculum structure in the U.S. differ from what I was accustomed to in Kenya. In Kenya, we had the 8-4-4 curriculum which later changed to Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). Adapting to a new educational system has been a learning curve, but it has also provided me with opportunities to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The level of community engagement and parental involvement in education is notable in Baltimore. There is a strong emphasis on collaboration between schools, parents, and the community to support the educational journey of students. Baltimore City Public Schools offer various avenues for educators to enhance their skills and stay updated on best practices through the various professional development opportunities.
3. Could you share some of the unique teaching methods or approaches you've brought from Kenya that you find valuable in your classroom at City Schools?
Ms. Karimi: As an international teacher, I have brought with me some unique teaching methods and approaches that I find valuable in fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. First, I use examples and case studies from my native Kenya, and other African contexts (some of my students come from other African countries-like Burkina Faso) to illustrate scientific principles. This not only makes the content more culturally relevant but also broadens students' perspectives by exposing them to various ways of applying scientific knowledge. Additionally, I employ diverse assessment methods that accommodate different learning styles and abilities. This may include project-based assessments, presentations, and alternative forms of evaluation that go beyond traditional exams. Finally, in many African cultures, storytelling is a traditional way of passing down knowledge. I integrate storytelling into my lessons to make abstract concepts more relatable and memorable which enhances the understanding of the concepts.
4. You bring a rich cultural perspective to our school community. How do you plan to incorporate and celebrate the cultural diversity that you value in your teaching and interactions with students and colleagues?
5. How do you envision your career progressing in City Schools, and what areas of teaching are you particularly interested in developing further?
Ms. Karimi: During my time at City Schools, I envision a dynamic and fulfilling career path with a focus on continuous learning, professional development, and making a positive impact on students' lives. I plan to actively engage in professional development opportunities provided by City Schools, such as workshops, seminars, and training programs. Lastly, I aim to further my education to expand my knowledge and enhance my career.
