student looking at books

Every week, we highlight some remarkable achievements, innovations, and success stories. Let's celebrate the great work of our schools, staff, and students!

Here are a few awesome things that happened this week:

  • Gardenville's Speech Language Pathologist, Betty Lightner, and students harvested the last vegetables from the garden they created, "Gardenville's L'il Garden." From the early spring until now, students got their hands dirty and learned about plants and vegetables and the growing process.

  • Cross Country's back-to-school night highlighted Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Through engaging interactive stations, families were introduced to the five SEL Competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making). Click here to see photos from the event on Facebook.

  • Carver is providing students with a free copy of the Princeton Review SAT Premium Prep Book to help them prepare for the SAT.

  • City College and Poly secured impressive positions in the U.S. News and World Report's National School Rankings. City proudly holds the No. 460 spot among 17,680 nationally ranked schools, while Poly secures a commendable No. 728 ranking. Additionally, Baltimore City College clinches the eighth rank in Maryland, while Baltimore Polytechnic Institute stands at 14th place within the state.
  • Congratulations to Armistead, BLSYW, and Belmont for being named a "Healthy School" by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This honor was awarded to 781 schools in 36 states. See all the winners for Maryland on their website.

  • Leith Walk students are among the many students in our district who receive fresh fruits and vegetables every week through the USDA's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), which is managed by our dedicated Food & Nutrition Services team! The FFVP is currently available at 95 different schools, offering students the opportunity to explore fresh and healthy items such as melons, mangoes, and rambutans that go beyond what they typically find in their school meals. This program also fosters connections between food and classroom learning. See photos on Leith Walk’s Instagram.

  • Clay Hill students start every day by reciting their four Community Affirmations in English and Spanish. To see all four affirmations, visit Clay Hill’s Facebook!

  • Holabird students in Mrs. Unger's class learned about native and invasive plants and started the process of removing the invasive plants that overtook their school garden over the summer. See more photos on Mrs. Unger’s Instagram.

  • Middle and high school students from numerous schools in our district participated in this year's NACAC National College Fair. The fair featured hundreds of colleges, providing an excellent opportunity for students to kickstart their college planning journey.

  • Beechfield has started the Kindergarten and First Grade Friday Healthy Eating Challenge to encourage healthy eating habits! Students tried a homemade sweet chili pickle with a hint of garlic and onion. After trying, they gave their thumbs up or thumbs down on the taste test! Check out the video on their Facebook.

  • City College hosted its annual college fair for eleventh- and twelfth-grade students. Over 60 colleges participated! Visit City College’s Advising Instagram to see photos from the event.
