BALTIMORE – Akil Hamm Sr., Chief of School Police for Baltimore City Public Schools, is departing after nearly 20 years of dedicated service. City Schools will undertake a nationwide search for Chief Hamm’s replacement.
Throughout his tenure, Chief Hamm demonstrated his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for students and staff. Under his leadership, City School Police revamped its deployment strategy and diversified officer training to facilitate the development of positive relationships between school police and their school communities. The department also successfully implemented diversion programs, developed critical school safety measures, community engagement, and de-escalation programming for district staff, and expanded collaboration with the Baltimore City Police Department.

Hamm has been on extended personal leave due to health-related matters. During Chief Hamm's extended leave, Major Norman Coleman stepped in as acting chief for the past 9 months. Norman Coleman, currently serving as acting Chief of School Police, will continue to serve in this important role while the nationwide search is underway. Coleman brings over 30 years of experience on the School Police force, having served in various roles.
