Every week, we highlight some remarkable achievements, innovations, and success stories. Let's celebrate the great work of our schools, staff, and students!
Here are a few awesome things that happened this week:
- City College alumnus André Robin De Shields was honored by Mayor Brandon Scott and the city of Baltimore with a street renaming in the neighborhood he grew up in! Check out photos from this joyful celebration.
- Over 1,000 students have been immunized at the free immunization clinics held at the district office. We're still holding them until September 29, so if you know a family that needs immunizations.
- Several schools joined the Ravens Caw to Action, a community service day in partnership with United Way. Ravens players stopped by to read to students at Bay-Brook while Cecil, Beechfield, and Patterson found other ways to participate. Read more about the event on WBAL.
- Reading is Fundamental and Amazon donated 1,500 books to Creative City students. Over 20 volunteers showed up to host a Books for Ownership event where all students chose three books to add to their home libraries.
- Dr. Santelises brought City Schools leaders together on August 17 to celebrate the beginning of a brand-new school year during the annual CEO Back-to-School Kick-Off gathering, held this year at the American Visionary Art Museum.
- Fourth- and fifth-grade students from Clay Hill learned about puppets and created their own to take to the Walk with Little Amal at City Hall. Little Amal is a 12-foot puppet walking 6,000 miles to raise awareness about the many children fleeing war, violence, and persecution. Take a look at the students' puppets!
- Gardenville has a new restorative lounge, courtesy of The Movement Team, where students can visit when they need to reflect, calm down, and receive support.
- City Schools celebrated our Community School Coordinators this week. We're so thankful for their hard work!
- Every week, Vivien T. Thomas celebrates Terrific Tuesday. Staff members model professional dress for students -- and look good doing it! Check out the photos on Viiven T. Thomas' Instagram.
- At Holabird, students are taking a resource class where they practice, develop, and apply mindfulness and fitness practices. Follow the class on Instagram!
- Author Tanisia Moore visited Moravia Park to read from her new children's book, "I Am My Ancestor's Wildest Dreams." Each student received a signed copy. Click here to see pictures from the event on Twitter.
