Cleanups, art projects, field trips and group activities help students invest in our planet
Every April 22, Earth Day reminds us to take care of our planet by enhancing sustainability, reducing waste, and ensuring the health of our communities for generations to come. This year, Earth Day’s theme was “Invest in Our Planet,” and our schools, students and educators participated in group projects, outdoor adventures, and sustainable learning experiences. Check out a few of the many ways our students celebrated Earth Day:
Gardening, cleaning, and recycling: Students at Liberty Elementary School got out into the sunshine and cleaned the school’s raised garden beds, cleaned up plastic to recycle, and planted pollinator plants! Check out some photos of their beautiful day, here.
Student-led “green” activities: At Reginald F. Lewis High School, the student “Green Team'' planned a day of Earth Day-oriented activities, from planting plants to painting flower pots. They even created their own t-shirts for the occasion! Find some photos here.
Cleaning up the park: Thanks to support from Blue Water Baltimore, students from Holabird Academy visited Middle Branch Park for a sunny day of cleanup and beautification! See for yourself!
Arts, cleaning, and games: Through scavenger hunts, an outdoor cleanup of Filbert Street Garden, and art projects, students at Bay Brook Elementary/Middle School made the most of Earth Day. Check out a photo recap, here.
Seed bombs! Our young green thumbs at Govans Elementary School spent Earth Day creating seed bombs - small clusters packed with wildflower seeds designed to bring greenery and pollination to urban landscapes! Here’s a photo gallery. And Kindergarteners created Earth Day-themed art!
Planting trees: At Callaway Elementary, students, teachers, staff, and families worked with the Baltimore Tree Trust and volunteers from Straughan Environmental to add trees to the Callaway campus. Students at Hampden Elementary/Middle and the National Academy Foundation did the same!
Mount Vernon cleanup: Students at Baltimore School for the Arts embarked on a neighborhood-wide cleanup of Mount Vernon. They even weeded around their school and installed a greenhouse in their outdoor learning space! See them in action, here.
