It's been another great week at City Schools!  

Championships, innovative programs, exciting opportunities, and prestigious recognitions: there's always something to celebrate in City Schools!   

Here are just a few of the good news items from this week:   

Awards and Competitions

Maryland State Championship in Policy Debate  – City College seniors Jonah Daniels and Noah Smith recently won the Maryland State Championship in Policy Debate. They completed the local league season as the only undefeated team and have qualified for three national championship competitions!  

2023 Morgan State University Science Fair  –  Middle and high school students across Baltimore City presented their science projects at Morgan State University. One of this year's overall winners was Poly student Louis Lapp for his project "Integrating Fourier Transforming and Residual Learning for Artic Sea Ice Forecasting." To see a full list of winners, click here!  
 
FIRST Robotics Chesapeake Regional – The Baltimore Bolts, a community-based FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team based in Baltimore, currently has six Poly students. At Regionals, the team ranked fourth overall, won the Creativity Award for a component of their robot design, and qualified to attend District Championships at the EagleBank Arena in Virginia on April 6-8. The Bolts team is open to any high school student in Baltimore. To learn more about The Baltimore Bolts, visit their website!  
 
The Daily Record's Top 100 Women – Baltimore School for the Art's Executive Director Roz Cauthen was named one of The Daily Record's Top 100 Women this year! Honorees are selected by an outside panel of judges for their professional achievement, community leadership, and mentoring. Learn more about this year's winners by visiting The Daily Record's website.  

2023 Iconz Spring Step Showdown – Step teams from Missouri, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Virginia met on March 25 for the Iconz Spring Showdown. BLYSW's step team, the Lethal Ladies, took home the Grand Champions trophy and the First Place High School Female trophy. Student, Staff & School News

Five City Schools students were surprised with full-tuition scholarships to McDaniel College this week! Congrats to Jacqueline (Mervo), Envy (Western), Evelyn and Autumn (Poly), and Adrianna (Green Street)! You can read more about these students and the scholarships on McDaniel College's website.  

 Thomas Jefferson raised over $1,000 for United Way through their Coins for Kindness campaign. Mrs. Gill and her fifth-grade class earned the title of the top fundraising team for the school! See more on Thomas Jefferson's Instagram!  
 
Kaboom!, a City Schools partner that builds playspaces for schools, featured City Schools and Maryland Teacher of the Year Berol Dewdney for Women's History Month. Check out how Ms. Dewdney encourages play and learning for her students at Commodore John Rodgers. 

North Bend students experienced an amazing BMX bike show by Dialed Action Sports. Part of the program included conversations about bike safety and drug awareness. To see some of the high-flying action, visit North Bend's Instagram.  

Fort Worthington's ESOL paraeducator, Ms. Sadouki, planned and organized a wonderful celebration to show the Fort Worthington community what Ramadan is all about. She decorated the ESOL room, played Arabic music, and had a henna station. Students created beautiful projects and made traditional foods for everyone to enjoy.  
 
Two sixth-grade students, Heaven and Grace, from Hampstead Hill Academy have launched a podcast for their school called The Buzz Podcast. They plan on doing interviews, sharing school news and updates, and more. To listen to their first episode and upcoming episodes visit the school’s website.  

In partnership with Elev8 Baltimore, Collington Square sent seven students on a college tour to visit HBCUs Morehouse, Spelman, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, and Clark Atlanta. They also visited the World of Coca-Cola, the BMW Plant, and the MLK, Jr. Center. To see more photos from their tour, visit Collington Square's Twitter.  

Furley has student language ambassadors to help welcome new students. The students are either bilingual or multilingual and can speak 12 different languages from 21 different countries.  
 
Ashburton alum and author David Miller hosted a book signing for third- and fourth-grade students. Miller discussed his time at Ashburton and his writing process. Each student got their very own signed copy of one of Miller's books! Click here to see photos from the event.
