What a week at City Schools!
Championships, innovative programs, exciting opportunities, and prestigious recognitions: there’s always something to celebrate in City Schools!
Here’s just a few of the good news items from this week:
Awards and Competitions
- VEX IQ Robotics State Championships – Our school robotics teams traveled to Owings Mills for the VEX IQ state championships. City Schools teams won 19 awards and earned 11 spots in the World Championships. Of the 28 teams that competed in the elementary division, 20 of them were City Schools teams! - Baltimore Urban Debate League – On March 4, the Baltimore Urban Debate League held its third debate competition of the school year. Debate helps our students learn to use their voice and develop their critical thinking and research skills. To see all the winners click here.
- Mid Atlantic Pom & Dance Association Competition – The BLSYW Elite Dance Team participated in the March 4 competition and won third place Jazz Captain, second place Hip Hop Captain, first place Jazz Team, and second place Hip Hop team! The team has no qualified for their state championships. Follow the team on Instagram to learn more!
- Baltimore Kids Chess League – The Novice #2 Baltimore Kids Chess League tournament held by Baltimore Kids Chess League had 147 students from 41 schools across all grade bands. To see all the winners click here.
- City Schools Annual Dance Symposium – City Schools high school dance teams met at Poly for the 2023 dance symposium. The theme this year was Hollywood and each large group was assigned a movie to create a dance routine to. You can read the winners here.
- MPSSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships – Congratulations to our City Schools student-athletes who placed during the MPSSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships. Eva Bachman (Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) placed 4th in the 140 weight class and Sukanya Stoute (Digital Harbor High School) placed 6th in the 235 weight class. - The Board Room Baltimore Chess Tournament – Five schools met for a 12-and-under chess competition at Govans Elementary School on February 27. First place was the chess team from Wildwood Elementary/Middle School and second place was the team from Wolfe Street Academy. Follow The Board Room Baltimore on Facebook to see more!
- Baltimore City High School Mock Trial Competition – The Baltimore City College mock trial team won this year's Baltimore City High School Mock Trial Competition. In this competition, students portray defense or plaintiff/prosecution and are scored on their performances by circuit court and district court judges and attorneys. The team is now eligible for regionals! You can congratulate the winners on City College’s Facebook page.
Student, Staff & School News
- Students from Green Street Academy and Cross Country had a chance to play chess against GZA from Wu-Tang Clan at City Hall! You can see WBAL’s coverage of this amazing event.
- North Bend Elementary School has a new book vending machine. It's incentive-based (students earn the chance for free tokens to get a brand-new book). You can see more photos of it on the North Bend Instagram page.
- State Senators and Delegates honored Maryland History students at the State House. This included City Schools students Marshall Civin, Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, and Abe Stolbach, Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle School. Read about this special day here.
- Berol Dewdney, City Schools 2022 Teacher of the Year, was honored by the Maryland General Assembly, along with other Teachers of the Year. Click here to see more.
- At Patterson Park Public Charter School, Mr. Widmann and Ms. Brooks’ kindergarten students learned about career readiness by interviewing for jobs in their classroom. They practiced everything from resume writing to their interview handshakes! See more photos on Patterson Park’s Facebook page.
- Before their community budget form, student government members at Harford Heights Elementary learned about school budgets and then gave their feedback about how they thought their school budget dollars should be allocated. Click here to see more!
