Another amazing week at City Schools!
Championships, innovative programs, exciting opportunities, and prestigious recognitions: there's always something to celebrate in City Schools!
Here are just a few of the good news items from this week:
Awards and Competitions
2023 MAPDA State Championship – After an amazing season, BLSYW's Elite Dance Team brought home the 2023 Division 3 Grand Championship award. They also won several other awards for their performances. To see the full list and photos from the event, visit the team's Instagram!
2023 MSWA Youth State Championship Tournament – BIA student Amir has had a fantastic wrestling season! He has become a two-time Regional Champion, has placed three times at state, and won tournaments in Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania! Baltimore's Finest Annual Step Show – Several of our school step teams participated in a Baltimore city-wide step competition. Congratulations to the Lethal Ladies of BLYSW for getting second place and an award for best theme. SWTT of City College also won the STEP IS LIFE award. 2023 NHSBCA Wooden Legacy Award – Lake Clifton/Reach! Boys Basketball Coach Herman "Tree" Harried was selected from all Maryland boys coaches for this special award. This award recognizes a Teacher-Coach who exemplifies excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. To see the full list of winners, click here.
Charm City Chess 2023 Spring Action Tournament – Several schools participated in this city-wide chess tournament, including Patterson, Frederick Douglass, Bard, and Green Street. Patterson took home the first-place trophy! Check out all the winners.
Baltimore City History Day Contest – More than 284 talented students participated in the Baltimore City History Day contest. Winners were chosen from five categories for individual and group efforts—research papers, exhibits, performances, websites, and documentaries. The 50 winners and 28 projects will move on to the Maryland State History Day Contest on May 6. Check out all the winners!
Student, Staff & School News
With the help of their teacher Mr. Jones, students at Johnston Square made a wonderful video to celebrate the women at their school for Women's History Month.
The North Bend Art Club took a trip to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC. The students' knowledge and creativity impressed the docents leading the museum tour. One museum staff member even asked if North Bend was an arts magnet school! Click here to see their art teacher's photos from the trip!
For the past six months, 30 City Neighbors High School students have participated in the Karson Institute's intensive Backpack Journalism program. Led by Dr. Kaye, the students are learning how to write and record their own stories and craft narratives about their communities. Check out some of their video and audio projects and learn more about the program.
Ms. Fitch and Mr. Joyner took 20 Hampstead Hill soccer team members to a Baltimore Blast game. The group traveled in the Baltimore Blast bus and walked on the field with their school banner for the Parade of Champions before the game. Thank you so much to Ms. Fitch for organizing and to Mr. Joyner, Cresenciana Leon, Whitney Denham, and Maria Garcia for chaperoning. Click here to see more photos from this amazing trip!
Twelve students from Reach!, NAF, and Dunbar traveled to Germany, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. Students visited castles in Germany, the 1972 Olympic sites, palaces in Germany, the birthplace of Mozart in Austria, museums and cathedrals in France, and many historical sites in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Eighth-grade students from Hazelwood had lunch at Blk Swan, a local black-owned restaurant. Students met co-owner Chef Saon, received a mini etiquette lesson, tried different dishes, toured the facility, and learned about the daily operation of a restaurant. Mayor Scott and Dr. Anthony Jenkins, President of Coppin State, happened to be having lunch in the building and stopped by to introduce themselves to the students and give some encouragement and inspiration. Students at Wildwood are learning to sew during arts integration in the ASALA after-school program. Watch students use a sewing machine for the first time!
Recently, ACCE coordinated 20 unique college and career readiness field trips for students! Trips included visits to Masonville Cove, Notre Dame of Maryland, Naval Academy, Fort Meade, UA Local 486 training school (plumbing, HVAC, etc.), Baltimore City Hall, and more!
