Dear Baltimore City Public Schools community,

We are aware of the rising concerns within our community stemming from national discussions around immigration and deportation. We understand that these are not just policy debates but deeply personal issues that can create uncertainty and fear for many of our families.

Per a commitment from our Board of School Commissioners, our schools will always be welcoming spaces where every child—regardless of immigration status—is valued, respected, and supported. Providing safe, inclusive, and affirming learning environments is one of our most important responsibilities. These efforts support the success of our students academically, socially, and emotionally.

All students and their families are an important part of our community, and the diversity they add enriches our school system. In the coming days, City Schools will provide additional resources for families and guidance for schools to best support students as we learn more about potential actions at the federal level.

It is important to us that all members of our community understand these key principles:  All students are guaranteed the right to attend school. Every child has the right to an education, regardless of immigration status, as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court.

City Schools welcomes all students: City Schools will not take any action that might discourage students from enrolling and participating in school, or that might lead to the exclusion of students, based on immigration status. If parents/guardians do not have identification, school staff can meet with them in the main office or arrange for them to be escorted to critical meetings, such as parent-teacher conferences, elsewhere in the building.

We robustly protect student privacy: City Schools does not ask about or disclose immigration status. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all students and their families, as required by federal and state law.  As always, families may restrict what information City Schools publicly shares about their student -  learn more here or by reviewing the City Schools Family Guide and the Students Rights & Responsibilities Handbook.

We will never tolerate discrimination, harassment, or bullying based on immigration status or for any other reason. If your student experiences such behavior, you or your student should immediately reach out to a trusted adult at their school or file a report using the online form available at this link.

We encourage all students to attend school, participate in activities, and enjoy time with friends without fear.

Our staff is here to support you and your children. If you have concerns or need assistance, please contact your school staff. The Baltimore City Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Affairs (“MIMA”) has additional resources on its website, including information about legal service providers in English and Spanish.

Together, we will continue to build a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Thank you for being an integral part of the City Schools community.
