students visit the Old Panama ruins

The Portrait of a Graduate is a shared vision between the district and the surrounding community, articulating aspirations for all students in Baltimore City. Click HERE to learn more about the strategic direction.

One of the five competencies is being a responsible and global citizen. This competency requires that students will contribute and act with empathy and integrity to improve the world by embracing diverse cultures and unique perspectives.

Students from Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle have exemplified this competency this year alongside their teacher, Mr. Francella. After months of hard work and fundraising, Mr. Francella and his students were able to take a trip to Costa Rica and Panama where they learned about colonial history, biodiversity, and the economic importance of the Panama Canal. They experienced a wide range of hands-on learning experiences, including visiting the “Old Panama” ruins and the Panama Canal. Students were also able to participate in an exhibition soccer match that they played against a youth outreach program in Costa Rica, further exemplifying their submersion in learning about another culture and gaining valuable perspectives.

Thank you, Mr. Francella for your hard work, and to our City Schools students who continue to engage and positively impact their world!

As we move forward, our work will align with the Portrait of a Graduate competencies. How has your work contributed to ensuring that our students are responsible and global citizens? Share examples of classwork, projects and enrichment activities through our good news form by clicking HERE
