Academics

Separate public day school Grades K-8

We serve students with significant cognitive disabilities, supporting them to develop functional life skills, readiness skills and independence to the best of their ability.  We are committed to helping students to develop their voice and learn to communicate their needs and wants. We provide positive behavior support that recognizes the intent of the child’s behavior as a means of communication.

Communication

The Core Vocabulary boards are an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system that provide students with a way to participate in academic and social activities. Students can use the Core board to answer questions during a classroom lesson (“I see”) or indicate their wants, needs and/or opinions (“I need help,” “I like that,” “I don’t want”) throughout the school day. The boards also support students in following classroom rules and routines by providing visual cues such as “all done” and “your turn.”

Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation is a framework to support students with development of social, emotional, and sensory regulation. It combines sensory, behavioral, emotional, and communication skills. The goal is to move students from co-regulate to self-regulation. It gives staff an opportunity to provide structured use of sensory strategies to help students and staff know when to use the resources available.

Community based instruction programs (cbi)

Community-based instruction (CBI) is a strategy or instructional method that promotes the teaching and use of academic and functional skills in the student’s natural environment.

The first goal of CBI is to teach students to function as independently as possible in as many community environments as possible to enhance their quality of life.

Positive Behavior supports (PBS)

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a set of research-based strategies used to increase quality of life and decrease interfering behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in a student’s enviornment. Positive behavior support incorporates a tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health.
